Her research focus ranged from the basic science of brain tumor cells subjected to a hypoxic environment to the clinical aspects of preserving normal tissues from the effects of radiotherapy in breast cancer. Of note, she was one of the first radiation oncologists in the world to focus on sparing erectile function in men treated with external beam radiation therapy for prostate cancer.Dr. Wernicke is a regular presenter at scientific meetings, a member of several national and international oncology societies, and a reviewer for peer-reviewed oncology journals.
