Andrew Newsom, PhD, is a licensed clinical psychologist practicing at Columbia University Psychiatry Specialty Services located within the Neurological Institute at Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC). Dr. Newsom is an Assistant Professor of Medical Psychology in Psychiatry at CUMC, with his primary duties being the provision of psychotherapy.Dr. Newsom completed his undergraduate and Master’s degrees in Psychology at Eastern Kentucky University, an institution with which his family has deep ties. He completed his doctoral work in Clinical Psychology at Marquette University, writing his dissertation on original research examining the explicit and implicit connections between meritocratic worldviews and mental illness stigma. Dr. Newsom spent several years training under, and working for, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). He completed his predoctoral internship at the Milwaukee VA Medical Center with a broad focus on outpatient and residential mental health. During his internship, Dr. Newsom became familiar with treating a wide-variety of disorders with the so-called “Third Wave” therapies to include Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Dr. Newsom then trained at the VA Boston Healthcare System for his postdoctoral fellowship, specializing in co-occurring Substance Use Disorders and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This led to a position at the Charlotte VA Healthcare Center using evidence-based psychotherapies to treat veterans with PTSD.At CUMC, Dr. Newsom provides individual and group psychotherapy for individuals with a wide variety of presenting problems and backgrounds. Given his relatively broad background in training, Dr. Newsom generally prefers to take an integrative approach to psychotherapy, meaning that he tends to tailor treatment to each individual he sees utilizing techniques from a number of psychological paradigms.
