About Edwin Homan, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Homan was born and raised in Clearwater, Florida, and he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from the University of Florida in Gainesville. He then earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Harvard University and received his M.D. degree from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia and his fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease at NewYork-Presbyterian/Cornell. He served as Chief Cardiology Fellow and undertook an additional year of laboratory training with Dr. James Lo funded by the division's NIH T32 training grant.

In the course of his PhD research at Harvard University, he discovered a new class of endogenous lipid molecules with anti-diabetic and anti-inflammatory properties that he named fatty acyl hydroxy fatty acids (FAHFAs). During his cardiology fellowship at Weill Cornell, he studied the role of the innate immune system and brown adipose tissue in obesity-related liver disease and heart failure, and he received the Glorney-Raisbeck Fellowship Award in Cardiovascular Disease.

Dr. Homan is a member of the American College of Cardiology, the National Lipid Association, and the American Society of Echocardiography. He also speaks Spanish and French.
