About Edyta Catalina Pirog, M.D.
Dr. Edyta Pirog received her MD from Medical University of Warsaw, Poland, graduating with the highest honors. She was awarded a Mayor of Warsaw Scholarship for Achievements in Research in the area of gynecologic pathology and came to the United States to continue research pursuits as a postdoctoral fellow, first at Emory University School of Medicine and then at University of Kentucky College of Medicine. Subsequently, Dr. Pirog completed residency training in pathology at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, followed by two consecutive fellowships in gynecologic pathology, at Columbia University and Weill Cornell Medical College, respectively. Upon completion of her training Dr. Edyta Pirog was appointed Instructor, then Assistant Professor and currently Associate Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College. Dr. Pirog received a Resident Teaching Award in recognition for her educational activities.
Dr. Edyta Pirog is pursuing research in the field of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infections and pathobiology of HPV-related lesions of the lower female and male anogenital tract. Dr. Pirog developed a conceptual framework for carcinogenesis in cervical adenocarcinomas and penile carcinomas reported in highly referenced publications. Dr. Pirog took part in worldwide international epidemiologic studies of HPV prevalence in cervical, anal and oropharyngeal carcinomas that provide data for design of second generation HPV vaccines. In the area of diagnostic pathology, Dr. Pirog developed criteria for accurate diagnosis of cervical, vulvar and anal HPV-related intraepithelial lesions with the use of adjunct immunostaining. Her current research is focused on identification of effective biomarkers of progression of HPV-related preneoplastic lesions.
