About Hwai Yin Ooi, M.D.
Dr. Ooi is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Neurology and Assistant Attending Neurologist at New York Presbyterian and Weill Cornell Medicine, specializing in Parkinson's Disease and other Movement Disorders.
Dr. Ooi earned her B.A. from Wellesley College with a concentration in biochemistry and art history, and her M.D. from SUNY Downstate Medical Center. She was recruited to stay for neurology residency at SUNY Downstate, where she served as Chief Resident during her final year of training and was awarded Resident Physician of the Year. She subsequently completed a two-year Movement Disorders fellowship at Mount Sinai Beth Israel, under the mentorship of Dr. Susan Bressman and Dr. Rachel Saunders-Pullman. After completing her training, she was recruited back to SUNY Downstate/Maimonides Medical Center where she served as Assistant Professor of Neurology and Attending Neurologist before joining New York Presbyterian and Weill Cornell Medicine.
Dr. Ooi offers compassionate and individualized care in Movement Disorders including Parkinson's Disease, Parkinsonism, essential tremor, dystonia, ataxia, chorea, myoclonus, tics and Tourette's syndrome, restless leg syndrome and gait disorders. She is experienced in botulinum toxin injection therapy for cranio-facial and limb dystonia, cervical dystonia, hemifacial spasm, blepharospasm, sialorrhea and limb spasticity. She is also trained to evaluate patients for deep brain stimulation (DBS) and has experience programming for Parkinson's Disease, essential tremor and dystonia. She is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and is a member of the American Academy of Neurology and Movement Disorders Society.
At Weill Cornell Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders Institute, Dr. Ooi participates in clinical trials to find better ways to prevent, screen for, diagnose, and treat Parkinson's disease and related disorders, with the hope of improving mobility and quality of life for her patients.
