About Jiwon Kim, M.D.
Jiwon Kim, MD, is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Medicine in Radiology at Weill Cornell Medical College, where she serves as Director of the Cardiovascular Imaging Program and Director of the Cardiovascular Imaging Fellowship. She leads clinical and research initiatives in multimodality cardiovascular imaging, with particular expertise in advanced echocardiography and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR).
Dr. Kim is recognized for her work in right ventricular (RV) remodeling and valvular heart disease. Her NIH-funded research focuses on advancing the understanding of RV pathophysiology through emerging imaging technologies, providing new insights into myocardial tissue characterization and novel markers of RV function. By leveraging imaging biomarkers, her research addresses gaps in knowledge related to RV performance and myocardial tissue properties as predictors of clinical outcomes, symptom burden, exercise capacity, and response to therapy.
At Weill Cornell, Dr. Kim has held several leadership roles, including Associate Director of the Adult Echocardiography Laboratory, Co-Director of the Cardiac MRI Program, and Director of the 3D and Strain Echocardiography Research Program. Nationally, she has contributed to clinical guidelines and consensus statements, serving as chair and co-author of multiple practice documents. She is an Associate Editor for Circulation: Cardiovascular Imaging and has served on the editorial boards of several leading journals, including the Journal of the American Society of Echocardiography. She also served as Digital Media Strategy Editor for Circulation: Cardiovascular Imaging, chaired the Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (SCMR) COVID-19 Task Force, and is a longstanding member of the ACC EchoSAP Writing Committee. Dr. Kim remains actively involved in leadership and committee roles across major professional societies, research consortia, and advocacy initiatives dedicated to advancing innovation in cardiovascular imaging and patient care.
Her contributions to cardiovascular imaging and translational research have been recognized through numerous honors, including the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI) Young Physician-Scientist Award and the Lila A. Wallis, MD Award for Women's Health Research. She has authored over 150 peer-reviewed publications in leading journals and is a frequent invited speaker at national and international scientific meetings.
Dr. Kim received her undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences from Columbia University and her medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where she was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and received the American Medical Women's Association Glasgow-Rubin Achievement Award. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School, followed by a Cardiovascular Disease fellowship at Brown University, where she served as Chief Fellow. She then completed an advanced cardiovascular imaging fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Dr. Kim is board-certified in Cardiovascular Disease, Echocardiography, Cardiac MRI, Cardiac CT, and Nuclear Cardiology.
