John E. Rubin, MD is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Anesthesiology and Assistant Attending Anesthesiologist at NewYork Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medicine. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from the University of Minnesota and attended medical school at New York Medical College. Dr. Rubin completed his residency in Anesthesiology at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he served as chief resident in his final year of training. He also competed a fellowship at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell Medical Center in Regional Anesthesiology and Acute Pain Medicine.

Dr. Rubin is actively engaged in medical student, resident, and fellow education. Dr. Rubin serves as the Director of Simulation Education within the Department of Anesthesiology at Weill Cornell. He is also the Assistant Director of Education for Academic Assistance for the residency program. Dr. Rubin has received multiple awards for education, including the Marjorie Topkins NYP Teacher of the Year in 2023 and the NYP Role Model of the Year in 2024.

Dr. Rubin is an international leader in the use of extended reality (XR) in medicine and is a founding member of the American Medical Extended Reality Association (AMXRA). He is the Co-Director of the Extended Reality Anesthesiology Immersion Laboratory (XRAIL) at Weill Cornell Anesthesiology. Along with his collaborators, Dr. Rubin investigates how to integrate XR for training in procedural tasks within anesthesiology, for traditional physical simulation education, and for pre-procedural planning for clinical care. He is also an expert in the use of generative artifical intelligence for the creation of artificially intelligent conversational agents (AICAs). Integrating AICAs into extended reality enables Dr. Rubin and his colleagues to implement high-immersion simulation training for soft skills education, including training for carrying out difficult conversations with patients.

Dr. Rubin spends most of his clinical time performing regional anesthesia, acute pain medicine, thoracic anesthesia, obstetric anesthesia, and general anesthesia. He is proficient in ultrasound-guided nerve blocks and catheter placements of the upper and lower extremity as well as the chest, abdomen, and back. Dr. Rubin also directs additional clinical research aimed at optimizing pain outcomes after surgery for the critically ill, particularly in the cardiac surgery patient population.
