About Michael Turman, Ph.D.

Dr. Michael L. Turman completed his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at Hunter College of the City University of New York (CUNY) and earned his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Long Island University's Brooklyn Campus, where he received research and clinical training in evidence-based assessment and psychotherapy for adults with mood, anxiety, and traumatic stress disorders. His line of research focused on the impact of chronic traumatic stress exposure in Latin American immigrant communities in the United States, and then in EMTs and paramedics working in the United States. He received the American Psychological Association's Minority Fellowship from 2018-2021, during which time he received specialized training in delivering culturally comprehensive and efficacious care to Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking communities. Dr. Turman also previously worked as an emergency medical technician (EMT) in the New York City 911 system, informing his deep familiarity with clinical concerns that impact both healthcare workers and first responders.

Dr. Turman completed his clinical internship training at the Miami Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center, where he received specialized training working with veterans facing anxiety and traumatic stress disorders, as well as serious and persistent mental illness. Following this, Dr. Turman completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Weill Cornell Medical College, where he worked with veterans at Weill Cornell's Military Family Wellness Center, and leveraged his experience as an EMT to help develop a Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy (VRET) platform for healthcare workers impacted by COVID-19-related traumatic stress. Dr. Turman continues to actively work with PATSS to develop novel and differential therapeutic for populations at high risk for chronic and traumatic occupational stress.
