About Nathan Ha, MD, PhD
Dr. Nathan Ha (he/him) is a psychiatrist at Columbia University's Faculty Practice Organization and the Gender Identity Program. He specializes in providing mental health care to adults and older adolescents and has expertise in helping those affected by differences of race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality. He has extensive training in LGBTQ+ mental health and in providing affirming care to people across the gender and sexuality spectrum. Working with patients collaboratively, he tailors treatment plans that combine skillful psychopharmacology with therapeutic approaches (psychodynamic, CBT, and DBT) that address the unique dimensions of each person's psychosocial, medical, and cultural experience. Whether someone is struggling with mood and anxiety disorders, learning and behavioral issues, or substance use and psychosis, Dr. Ha believes that a holistic approach can best promote agency, belonging, and well-being.
Dr. Ha earned his MD from the Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine and completed his residency training at the Yale Department of Psychiatry. He earned his PhD from Princeton University in the history of science focusing on gender and sexuality studies and was a postdoctoral fellow at the UCLA Institute for Society and Genetics. Dr. Ha draws upon his broad knowledge of both the social and medical sciences to help his patients and his colleagues strive towards better health for our communities. His historical research has focused on the discovery of the X and Y chromosomes and hormones, and how those discoveries affected the medical treatment of sexual and gender minorities. His work as an educator translates knowledge from the social sciences and humanities to improve patient care and medical training, and to increase justice and equity in healthcare systems.
