Dr. Sameera Husain is a Professor in the Department of Dermatology of the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University. She joined the full-time faculty of the Department of Dermatology in 1999 and has been an active member of the university community ever since. Prior to this (1997-1999), she served as a Consulting Dermatopathologist, in the Departments of Pathology at St Lukes-Roosevelt Hospital Center, as well as at Beth Israel Medical Center. Dr. Husain received her medical degree from Dow Medical College, Karachi, Pakistan. She completed her Pathology residency and Surgical Pathology fellowship at Columbia University Medical Center, New York, and her fellowship in Dermatopathology at Cornell University Medical Center, New York with Dr. Scott McNutt. Dr. Husain is board certified in both Pathology and Dermatopathology.As one of four Dermatopathologists in the department, Dr. Husain sees a large volume of biopsies (which over the years has ranged up to 43,000 specimens per year), all within a turnaround time of 24-48 hours. Her areas of special interest include alopecias, infectious diseases and lymphoproliferative disorders. She actively publishes in peer-reviewed journals and routinely participates in and presents at international Dermatopathology and Pathology meetings. As appreciation of her high standards of patient care and academic responsibilities, she was recently (2020) inducted into the Academy of Clinical Excellence at Columbia University.Additionally, Dr. Husain actively lectures Dermatopathology residents, and Pathology residents on a range of specialized topics in dermatopathology. Appreciation for her educational commitment has come in the form of three resident-awarded "Teacher of the Year" awards over the past few years.Dr. Husain is a fellow of the American Society of Dermatopathology and member of the New York Dermatologic Society.
