About Shayan Shirazian, MD
Dr. Shirazian obtained his undergraduate and medical degrees from Brown University and completed his internal medicine residency and nephrology fellowship at Columbia University Medical Center. After completing his training at Columbia, he spent 7 years at NYU-Winthrop Hospital where he was the fellowship program director and the director of nephrology clinical trials before being recruited back to Columbia. He is a board-certified general internist and nephrologist and is Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Nephrology at Columbia University Medical Center.
Dr. Shirazian's clinical interests include home dialysis modalities, treating co-morbid mood disorders in patients with kidney disease, hypertension management, cancer-related kidney disease and preventing recurrent kidney stones. Dr. Shirazian is a member of the ColumbiaDoctors Hypertension Center, a multi-disciplinary center of excellence that provides high quality care and state-of-the-art diagnostic testing for patients with hypertension. He was voted a Top Doctor in the New York Metro Area for 2018 by New York Magazine and Castle Connolly.
Dr. Shayan Shirazian's research aims to test, and implement interventions to improve quality of life and self-care in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end stage renal disease. His research also aims to define the role of comorbid mood disorders in CKD progression. He is currently the Principal Investigator for a funded trial (Coplon grant) of a behavioral-education intervention to improve quality of life in hemodialysis patients. His other research interests include preventing recurrent kidney stones and testing new treatments for cancer-related kidney diseases.
