About Shepard D. Weiner, MD

Dr. Weiner is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC). He is the Medical Director of the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Center at CUMC where he specializes in the diagnosis and management of patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. The Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Center utilizes all the resources at the medical center to provide comprehensive care including advanced cardiac imaging, invasive septal reduction therapies (septal myectomy or alcohol septal ablation) when indicated, and cardiogenetics.


Dr. Weiner also has expertise in coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, pericardial disease, and other cardiomyopathies. Additionally, he sees patients for cardiovascular risk assessment with particular attention devoted to high blood pressure control, cholesterol management, and optimization of lifestyle considerations.


In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Weiner is an Attending physician at Columbia University Medical Center's Cardiovascular Ultrasound laboratory where he performs and interprets stress echocardiograms, transesophageal echocardiograms, and transthoracic echocardiograms.


His current research focuses on hypetrophic cardiomyopathy clinical outcomes. Dr. Weiner was the Associate Director for the Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship at CUMC from 2010 - 2016. He is a key faculty member for Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons' Cardiovascular Disease course, and was awarded the prestigious Ewig Clinical Scholar Award in 2014 for recognition of his efforts and skills in teaching at the medical school. He also provides Physician Leadership in Clinical Cardiology for the Columbia Heart Source program.


Dr. Weiner received his undergraduate degree from Cornell University (with Distinction). He received his MD from Mount Sinai School of Medicine (as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society). He completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center. He then was selected to be Chief Medical Resident at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia. Following his Chief Medicine Residency, Dr. Weiner completed his fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia, and was selected to be a Chief Fellow during the final year of fellowship training. Dr. Weiner also completed an Advanced Fellowship in Echocardiography at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia.
