Usama Gergis, M.D., MBA, has been serving as a faculty of Weill Cornell Medicine (WCM) since September 2007. He is board certified in Hematology and Medical Oncology. He also completed a fellowship in bone marrow transplantation at the Lee Moffitt Cancer and Research Institute at the University of South Florida. Most recently, Dr. Gergis obtained a Masters in Business Administration at Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management of Cornell University in 2017.
Dr. Gergis has three areas of academic interest and clinical specialization including, refining stem cell graft options for patients who lack suitable stem cell donors, using novel cellular therapy for high-risk myeloid malignancies such as acute myeloid leukemia, myelodysplastic syndromes and myelofibrosis, as well as decreasing post-transplant complications.
Dr. Gergis and the Weill Cornell Medicine (WCM) and NewYork-Presbyterian (NYP) Bone Marrow and Stem Cell (BMT) Transplant team continue to refine the novel use of haplo-cord grafts for patients who lack matched donors. With over 200 haplo-cord stem cell transplants performed, the WCM/NYP BMT Program has pioneered the use of this unique concept with results that parallel those of matched related and unrelated stem cell grafts.
Dr. Gergis continues to develop novel treatments incorporating stem cell transplantation for people at risk of acute myeloid leukemia, myelodysplastic syndromes and myelofibrosis. Incorporating novel agents as a bridge to transplantation and the infusion of umbilical cord units to enhance the effect of chemotherapy are two areas of his current research.
In 2013, Dr. Gergis assumed responsibility as the Oncology Director of NewYork-Presbyterian Global Services. In this role, Dr. Gergis fosters collaborative relationships with international colleagues and academic institutions. His efforts have allowed us to better serve the needs of adult and pediatric patients from around the world who are seeking cutting-edge cancer treatment at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and Weill Cornell Medicine.
